ED officer arrested for allegedly accepting bribe from government employee in Tamil Nadu

An Enforcement Directorate (ED) official named Ankit Tiwari was arrested in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a government employee, reported India Today.

The State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption took Tiwari into custody and conducted searches at the ED’s Madurai office and his residence. The investigation indicates the involvement of other officers from Madurai and Chennai. Tiwari, accused of extortion and accepting large bribes, allegedly distributed the funds to other ED officials. Seized documents suggest further searches at ED offices in Madurai and Chennai. the media house reported.

The case originated when, on October 29, Tiwari contacted a government employee in Dindigul, claiming the Prime Minister’s Office had instructed the ED to investigate a closed DVAC case. Tiwari demanded a bribe of Rs 3 crore to close the investigation, later settling for Rs 51 lakh.

The government employee paid the first instalment of Rs 20 lakh on November 1. Tiwari insisted on the full amount, threatening severe consequences, leading the employee to file a complaint with DVAC’s Dindigul unit on November 30. Tiwari was arrested on December 1 while accepting the second instalment and has been remanded to judicial custody until December 15.
